Meet Nori, a sweet little ocean friend who can be made as either a narwhal or a whale. Add the optional spiral-ridge tusk for Nori’s signature narwhal look, or leave it off for an adorable baby whale.

Materials

Yarn Requirements (#3 DK & Sport Weight)

  • Body, Tail & Flippers (MC) – Light Blue #3 DK-weight yarn, approx. 60–75 yd
  • Tusk (optional, CC) – White sport-weight yarn, approx. 8–10 yd
  • Eyelash & Mouth – Black yarn, approx. 1 yd, for embroidery

Tools & Notions

  • 3.5 mm (US E/4) crochet hook for Body, Tail & Flippers
  • 2 mm (US B/1) crochet hook for the Tusk
  • 10–12 mm safety eyes
  • Polyfill fiberfill stuffing
  • Tapestry needle, stitch marker and scissors

Upscaled size: Approx. 8–9 in. (20–23 cm) using bulky or chenille yarn and a 5.5–6 mm hook.

Gauge: Gauge is not critical for this amigurumi, but maintain consistent, fairly tight tension so stuffing does not show and the body retains the intended shape.

  • dec: Invisible decrease

Part 1: Tusk (Optional)

1.1 Tusk – White Sport-Weight Yarn (CC), Worked in BLO Throughout

Note: Leave off the tusk to turn your narwhal into a sweet little whale.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Leave unstuffed for a softer tusk, or add only a tiny pinch of stuffing to Rnds 9–13 for a firmer shape.

Finish stuffing firmly. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Flatten the opening and work 4 sc through both layers to close.

Part 3: Tail Fins & Flippers

3.1 Tail Fins (Make 2) – MC

Rnd 1: 4 sc in MR. (4)
Rnd 2: [sc, inc] x2. (6)
Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x3. (9)
Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] x3. (12)
Rnds 5–6: sc around. (12)

Fasten off. Do not stuff. Flatten the opening and work 3 sc through both layers to close. Weave in the yarn tail on one fin; leave a long tail on the second fin for joining and assembly.

3.2 Flippers (Make 2) – MC

Rnd 1: 4 sc in MR. (4)
Rnd 2: [sc, inc] x2. (6)
Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x3. (9)
Rnds 4–8: sc around. (9)
Rnd 9: [sc, dec] x3. (6)

Fasten off. Do not stuff. Flatten the opening and work 3 sc through both layers to close. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Progress Check

  • Tusk (optional)
  • Body
  • 2 tail fins
  • 2 flippers

Part 4: Final Assembly

  1. Tusk: Center the tusk on top of the head and sew it securely across approximately Rnds 6–7. Skip this step for the whale variation.
  2. Tail: Join the two tail fins at their flattened edges, then use the remaining long yarn tail to sew the assembled tail securely to the closed end of the body.
  3. Flippers: Sew one flipper to each side of the body around Rnds 13–15, approximately level with the bottom of the safety eyes. Check that both sit evenly before securing the final stitches.
  4. Final touches: Check that all parts are secure, weave in remaining yarn tails, and gently shape the finished piece.
